When thinking about oral hygiene, while trying to eliminate chemicals from your life, toothpastes and mouth washes are often overlooked. The truth is, a lot of the popular products out there have many potentially harmful chemicals and other synthetic ingredients. Even Tom’s of Maine, who claim to have all-natural products, actual has the harmful chemical, SLS, in their toothpaste. When speaking of toothpaste, there are 5 chemicals you should avoid.
Fluoride (aka sodium fluoride) is the chemical most commonly found in toothpaste. Although fluoride is promoted as an important defense against tooth decay, it can also be harmful if ingested. You should particularly keep this in mind for children. Triclosan is a pesticide added to toothpastes, soaps, and even toys that the EPA themselves have stated is harmful to humans and the environment. Studies link triclosan to skin irritation, endocrine disruption, and even antibiotic resistance. Another chemical that is added to bath products for its cleansing properties, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) has been found to irritate the eyes and skin. It has also been linked to cancer when combined with other common chemicals. Propylene Glycol is a synthetic liquid that absorbs water. It is found in many toothpaste brands and it’s also the same substance used to make fog in a fog machine. Propylene glycol has been linked to brain, liver, and kidney issues with repeated exposure. The last chemical to watch out for is diethanolamine (DEA) which is added to toothpastes to make extra foamy. It has also been linked to cancer and hormone disruption. You should also steer clear of mouth washes that contain alcohol.
